Ⅰ.Why Do New Energy Vehicles Require Special Capacitors?

Unlike traditional vehicles, the core of new energy vehicles (pure electric, hybrid, and fuel cell vehicles) lies in their high-power energy conversion and drive systems. These systems operate in harsh electrical environments characterized by high voltage, high current, and high frequency, placing extremely stringent requirements on capacitors.

  • High Voltage: Platform voltages are evolving from 400V to 800V or even higher.
  • High Current: Motor drive currents can reach hundreds of amperes.
  • High Frequency: IGBT/MOSFET switching frequencies are high, generating enormous current and voltage change rates (dv/dt).
  • High Temperature: High ambient temperatures exist in the engine compartment and electric drive system.
  • High Reliability: Directly related to vehicle safety and operation.

Ⅱ.Main Capacitor Types and Their Applications

2. Vehicle Inverter (Core Application):

DC-Link Capacitor: Connected in parallel to the inverter's DC bus, it absorbs the high-pulse current generated during motor drive, stabilizes the DC voltage, and provides instantaneous energy for IGBT switching. This is the core function of film capacitors.

Buffer Capacitor: Connected in parallel with the IGBT module, it absorbs voltage spikes during switching, protecting the IGBT from damage.

3. On-Board Charger (OBC): Used for input/output filtering to ensure power quality.

4. DC-DC Converter: Used for filtering and voltage regulation during high-to-low voltage DC-DC conversion.
